10 Most Ridiculous Things Batman Has Survived

9. The Atomic Bomb

Batman Odyssey
Warner Bros.

The only entry on this list not directly from the comics, this example was too good not to include. There is a lot of good to be said about Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. While many of us may disagree with Mark Kermode that anything after Christopher Nolan’s Batman feels like a footnote, it is hard to argue that Nolan didn't make the character cool again, and the influence of those films casts a long shadow.

However, Nolan isn’t exempt from some of the silliness inherent to the comic book depiction of Batman, and it shows itself most notably towards the end of the final installment in the trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Flying out to sea with a neutron bomb powerful enough to destroy the entirety of Gotham, Bruce Wayne disappears over the horizon as the explosion engulfs it. There is, surely, no way he could survive. Not even Batman could survive that.

Well, what is stronger than nuclear explosions? A good call-back and a satisfying ending. As a grieving Alfred Pennyworth attempts to enjoy his retirement, he spots Bruce and Selina Kyle enjoying a coffee at the same café he had mentioned earlier in the movie. It’s sweet, just don’t ask too many questions about how he survived. Or any questions, really.
