2. He Was Reduced To A Single Cell
An alien warlord called The Horde kidnapped the X-Men and sent them to The Citadel of Light and Shadow to retrieve a cosmic artefact called the Crystal of Ultimate Vision.
Horde had a shard of this crystal on his forehead, which gave him cosmic powers and rendered him immune to all the X-Men's attacks. Realising that they stood no chance at defeating him, the team had no choice but to venture into the Citadel to find this crystal.
When Wolverine located the artefact, the Horde appeared before him to ensure the X-Men didn't use it against him. The alien gouged out Wolverine's heart, taunting that he would keep it as a trophy.
However, a drop of Wolverine's blood landed on the crystal, shredding his body on a molecular level. We then see Wolverine reform from scratch; DNA, nerves, organs, bones, muscles, etc. Watching Wolverine getting pieced back together is awesome (but gross).
Now endowed with the power of the crystal, Wolverine pulled the shard from Horde's forehead, killing him. Wolverine believed that if he used his newfound abilities to reshape the universe, he would be no better than Horde. He decided to abandon godhood and returned to Earth with his friends.
