Undeniably the baddest of the bad when it comes to the X-Men universe, Apocalypse is - as you could probably tell by the name - the harbinger of the end times; a mutant so ancient and so powerful that, not through lack of trying, is almost impossible to defeat.

Audiences were given a taste of said power in last year's X-Men: Apocalypse, and while Oscar Isaac's prosthetics probably didn't convey just how dangerous a being he is in the comics, it's telling that the character's only just gotten the big-screen treatment. He's an immortal, a genius in every area, and a technopath with a serious penchant for firing energy at his enemies.

For reference, the character is so powerful that the X-Men have had to resort to extreme measures to eliminate him. In Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force, the black-ops team (led by Wolverine), are tasked with assassinating the being while he's recovering in a childlike state. Despite being in his infancy at this stage, the team (spearheaded by Fantomex) terminate him with extreme prejudice, lest he return more powerful than ever in the future.

You have to be pretty powerful to make the X-Men resort to that...
