10 Most Tragic Moments In The History Of The Fantastic Four

1. Sue Loses The Baby - Fantastic Four #267-268 (1984)

Fantastic Four
Marvel Comics

As Sue Storm was about to give birth to her second child, the doctor warned Reed Richards she was suffering from complications.

Since the baby was conceived in The Negative Zone, it was exposed to unique radiation, which was beyond Earthly science. Despite the assistance of the world's best radiologists, Bruce Banner, Otto Octavius, Michael Morbius, and Walter Langowski, Reed couldn't see any way to save his child.

Now, Sue was in a similar situation when she gave birth to her son, Franklin. Due to cosmic radiation that endowed her with her powers, Sue will struggle with any pregnancy. But because Franklin was born safe and sound, the reader naturally assumed Sue's second child would live. I mean, this is Marvel's first family we're talking about. The Fantastic Four are known for being fun, silly, and cheesy.

That's why readers were in shock when they read Reed and Sue's child didn't make it. The Fantastic Four have had some emotional moments up until this point but never anything to this level (and never since either).

Although this story was retconned in 2002 so the baby survived, Reed and Sue's child was canonically dead for 17 years.
