10 Most Tragic Moments In The History Of The Fantastic Four

9. Reed Richards Dies - Fantastic FourĀ #254-255 (1983)

Fantastic Four
Marvel Comics

After an extra-terrestrial called Taranith Gestal crash-lands on the world of Mantacora, he does everything in his power to repair his ship.

Since Taranith's vessel is fuelled by mind waves (which only makes sense in the world of comics), the alien drains the minds of the Mantacorans, leaving the majority of the population as lifeless husks. After draining nearly everyone on the planet, Taranith is frustrated to learn the "thought energy" isn't sufficient enough to charge his ship.

When the Fantastic Four venture to Mantacora, Taranith befriends them after deducing that Reed's brilliant mind is capable of bringing his vessel back to full power. When the Four let their guard down, Taranith drugs Reed and imprisons his teammates.

By the time Sue, Ben, and Johnny break out of their cell and locate Reed, it is too late. Taranith has successfully transferred Reed's thoughts to his ship engine, rendering the leader of the Fantastic Four braindead. As Sue cradles her husband's lifeless body, it is haunting to hear her lament that she could sense that Reed's soul had left his body.
