Even though Kenny Braverman was always sickly during his youth, he never made excuses and physically pushed himself as far as he could. Despite his efforts, he always came second in every sport and contest, constantly losing the top spot to his classmate, Clark Kent. Braverman's father bullied him for years for always coming up short, which made him develop a seething hatred for Clark.

Many years later, Braverman learned the reason he was always poorly was because he was born near Superman's rocket when it crash-landed, exposing him to radiation. Believing Superman was to blame for his miserable childhood, Braverman vowed to destroy him.
