Batman Fan? Comic book beginner? Here are 10 Batman Stories you absolutely MUST READ!

A death in the family
DC Comics

With eighty years of crime fighting under his belt, Batman sure has his fair share of tales to tell. From his light-hearted escapades with the Joker in the 1940s to epic universe breaking events against Darkseid in the 2000s, it can sometimes be difficult to decide what stories take priority reading.

But don't worry, because we've done the hard work for you. We've separated the wheat from the chaff, and chosen some of Batman's most iconic, character-defining, and legendary stories of all time. Some of the entries in this list have gone on to inspire blockbuster movies like Joker (2019) and the Dark Knight trilogy, whereas others have spawned a whole series of video games.

Batman can credit his crown of popular culture to comic book royalty such as Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Tim Sale and so many more - all of which make an appearance in this list. If you're looking for a Batman recommendation, you've come to the right place!

Whether you're a newcomer reader to the Batman world or a hardcore fan like us, we hope you can agree that the stories in this list you simply MUST read.

10. White Knight

A death in the family
DC Comics

(Batman: White Knight, Batman: Curse of the White Knight)

Heavily inspired by the classic tv show: Batman the Animated Series, Sean Murphy takes those characters we all know and love down a new, stand-alone, dark and gritty tale.

The first book (Batman: White Knight) follows the events of a seemingly “sane” Joker as he accuses Batman of being Gotham’s true villain. Paired with a side plot of two Harley Quinns, and a whole array of classic batmobiles in use, White Knight is destined to be a future classic.

The follow up run, Curse of the White Knight, sees the return of fan-favourite character Azrael wage his holy crusade in the streets of Gotham once again, in a 3-way war between himself, Joker, and Batman. Unfortunately due to the current global situation, as of writing this in June 2020, we are still awaiting the final issue with bated breath - but we are positive it will not disappoint!

The “Murphyverse” is a great starting point for new readers but also a familiar and rewarding read for long time Batman fans. Additionally, Sean Murphy’s artwork and “comicstry” is second to none. These books cannot be recommended highly enough.
