Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth is the most abstract entry on this list. Helmed by the visionary author Grant Morrision and illustrated by the brilliant Dave Mccean, Arkham Asylum is a surreal and twisted tale for the caped crusader.
Called to the supervillain-supermax psychiatric hospital of Arkham Asylum to try and dispel a riot led by Joker, Batman descends into a world of unperceived danger. Batman interacts with old enemies he locked up years ago, such as a version of Two-Face who has transitioned from using a coin to choose his decisions to tarot cards, which has turned him even more insane.
During all this, the Dark Knight also uncovers the blood curdling truth behind Arkham Asylum’s origin. The graphic novel received such a cult following, it went on to inspire the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum - the first of the Arkham Series - and also the movie Batman Begins.
