A death in the family

(Batman: Year One)

Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One is the quintessential Batman origin story. In the mid-80s, after almost fifty years of the golden age of Batman comics, it was time to go back to the start and establish where it all began.

Miller re-established one of the world's most beloved character’s beginnings whilst creating a perfectly streamlined narrative that still holds up to this day. It goes without saying to mention the book’s remarkable artist David Mazzuchelli, who pencilled the legendary panels and pages.

The immortal images of Bruce lying next to his dead parents behind the theatre, his mother’s pearl necklace exploding over the alleyway, and the unforgettable moment you see Batman for the first time will be idolised by comic book fans forever.

Year One has also been a countless source of inspiration including some examples being Batman Begins, the TV show ‘Gotham’, and the Wayne’s fateful murder has been referenced in almost every piece of Batman media.
