10 Indie Comics That Deserve Your Attention

1. The Wicked + The Divine (Image Comics)

Creators: Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie Read if you like: Young Avengers, Phonogram, any of the music on this 'WicDiv' playlistCurrent Issue: 2 Effortlessly cool, thoroughly modern, elegantly hip. These are all ways to describe this stunning new series from fan favourites Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. The pair have worked together before (most recently on Marvel's Young Avengers series, another series that just oozes cool), and those who know their style will know what to expect. At least in terms of quality anyway. The Wicked + The Divine - the plus sign instead of an "and" is important - follows the core concept of Gods on Earth. Gods from all religions and walks of life come down to the mortal plane and take over the bodies of 12 teenagers. For two years these teenagers are the living embodiment of said Gods, and then after two years, they die. This happens every ninety years, and in 2014 it is happening again. Dealing with concepts such as faith, religion, celebrity, stardom, teenage fantasy, idolatry and worship (both Godly and superficial), writer Gillen channels the voices of a modern generation and, with a backdrop of pop culture references and real-world musical soundtracks (see above), a saga is being crafted that defines as much as innovates. There is literally no telling what is going to happen next in this series, but you definitely need to be along for the ride. The beauty of a list like this is that it could easily be made up of 10 completely different books on the stands at the moment, so let us know what you think of this list, and what you think are some indie comics that deserve more attention!
