10 Indie Comics That Deserve Your Attention

7. Nailbiter (Image Comics)

Creators: Joshua Williamson & Mike Henderson Read if you like: Scream, Halloween, Silence of the Lambs, The Following. Current Issue: 3 A horror comic with a distinctly tongue-in-cheek vibe, Nailbiter rests on a single fascinating premise: there's a town called Buckaroo, and it is the Birthplace of Serial Killers. Since 1969, the town has spawned 16 of the country's vilest serial killers, the latest of which is Edward Charles Warren (the nailbiter of the title), who liked to gnaw the fingers off his victims before killing them. When the FBI agent who solved the 'nailbiter' case goes missing in the town it falls to his friend, NSA agent Nicholas Finch, to investigate. His enquiries take him right into the heart of Buckaroo and face-to-face with the nailbiter himself. Despite its grim premise this is actually a lot of fun to read. There's a dark sense of humour both in the characters and their interactions, as well as the ever more absurd retellings of past serial killers and their ridiculous fetishes. Don't misunderstand though - there is a very real tension that flows through the book, and the pacing is as good as any decent horror film. The latest issue especially has cranked up the suspense as a shadowy figure haunting the proceedings inches closer and closer to the protagonists. A darkly enjoyable series.
