Ah, that old chestnut again.

Sales figures and the comics industry continue to vex as much as they do perplex, with articles every year prophesying the decline of the industry based on these very figures. 2017 was a tad different in that respect, as it wasn't only journalists and academics who commented on declining sales, but Marvel themselves too. The problem, however, was that the comments weren't really all that valuable at all, with David Gabriel having remarked in April that burgeoning efforts to diversify the Marvel Universe were somehow responsible for pushing readers away.

Apart from the fact that, y'know, he was wrong, it was yet another moment that defined Marvel's very inglorious 2017. Event fatigue, the price of books, and other such issues do, however, make the medium less accessible, and until Marvel alert to that fact, it'll be the same story this year as it was the last.

The industry needs a strong Marvel, but if things continue the way they are, we could be left with a very different landscape to the one we've had though all ages, Modern through to Bronze.
