10 Notable Career Changes Of Famous Comic Book Characters

6. Oliver Queen €“ Mayor

In his early days, Green Arrow was nothing more than a bow-and-arrow themed copy of Batman, right down to his Arrowcar and Arrowplane. However, starting in the late 1960s, he morphed into a politically left-wing crusader focused on helping the poor and working-class. He still helped out the league will paranormal threats and extraterrestrial attacks, but he also worked to try to fix the system that left many in the United States at a disadvantage. This is what prompted Oliver Queen to take his crusade to the political front after the events of Infinite Crisis. After amassing a large personal fortune, Queen ran for and was elected mayor of Star City. Although he continued to be Green Arrow, his acts as mayor drew just as much, if not more, attention than his vigilante activities. Among other things, he married 140 gay couples in front of city hall and then forced them to stay in the city for more than 14 days so that they would have to spend money and bring revenue to the city. He also erected a wall around the Glades, a slum neighbourhood that was notorious for rampant crime. His time as mayor ended after Deathstroke and Constantine Drakon conspired with Star City Chief of Police Brian Nudocerdo to reveal Queen€™s financing of the Outsiders, a questionable vigilante group. Queen resigned and returned his attention to being Green Arrow, but it wasn€™t all bad. He proposed to Black Canary and they eventually married. Since Green Arrow has always been more politically inclined than his allies, it made sense that he would take it to the next level and enter politics. Sure we might see the occasional alternate reality story where the hero becomes president or something, but rarely do we actually see them fight on the political front. You€™d think that as a superhero you wouldn€™t want to draw to much attention to yourself for fear of someone discovering your identity. Still, Queen wanted to make Star City a better place for those who were disadvantaged and less privileged, and he did his best during his time as mayor, but a combination of blackmail and his extreme politics proved to be his undoing.
