Female battle armour has often caused controversy in media. The form fitting metal that accentuate breasts so the audience can always be aware the fighter is female is sometimes seen as the compromise, but in reality curvaceous armour is much more open to splitting or buckling, lacerating whichever unlucky soul is wearing it.

Star Wars’ Captain Phasma is much more battle efficient design, but then that drew some ire for not really looking like a woman’s armour. Red Sonja, however, has no such issue there. Wearing a chainmail bikini, she clearly has no interest in actually protecting herself during a fight and just wants to cover up her explicit parts so her fans can enjoy watching her do her thing.

Comics, despite still containing weird and wonderful powers, are expected to serve up a modicum of realism these days. Dressing the way she does, Sonja abandons all that. In 2016, she was redesigned with a more realistic Celtic warrior vibe, but when Amy Chu relaunched the character in 2017, the bikini was back.

There’s no justification bar ‘she’s always worn it’ or ‘she looks hot’; it’s the definition of outdated. At least they tried to change it once, even if it didn’t last.
