Force Projection (also known as Astral Projection or Doppelgänger) allowed the user to project their image across the galaxy, and was introduced in the 1992 Star Wars: Dark Empire comic book line. In the comic's sixth issue, Luke Skywalker, who had fallen to the Dark Side in an attempt to defeat it from within, uses this Force power to trick Han and Leia. On board the Millennium Falcon, Luke tells his friends how to defeat the reborn Emperor's dreaded World Destroyers, with it being revealed that Skywalker is actually still on the planet Byss.

For 2017's The Last Jedi, Skywalker once again used the power to trick his fallen apprentice, Kylo Ren, into a final confrontation. Because of Luke's Force Projection, the remains of the Resistance are able to escape the blood-soaked battlefield of Crait and live to fight another day.

There are some significant differences between the Legends and canon representations of Force Projection, however. In the Dark Empire comic, Leia mentions it is a Dark Side power, whilst Luke is very much still a Light Side user in The Last Jedi. The comic also showed use of the power had no major consequences, but the 2017 film sees it exhaust the Jedi Master before becoming one with the Force as a result of projecting himself across the galaxy.
