3. A Superman Dies
What starts out as a joke between the writers and editors of DC Comics eventually goes on to be one of the most powerful moments in comic book history as they do the unthinkable and kill off the Man of Steel.
You all know the story by now. A rampaging Doomsday is out for blood and he has Superman in his sights. An epic battle ensues and in the end, Doomsday is stopped but at a huge cost. The son of Jor-El is so badly beaten during the fight that he succumbs to his wounds and dies.
What makes this such a chilling moment is that even during everything that proceeds it you just know that Superman is going to be alright because he's Superman but when you get to that last page and are greeted with Lois in tears to the point of being inconsolable, you suddenly realize that they really are going to go all in on this and end Clark Kent.
Even though he would eventually return from the dead- because comics -for a long time no-one was sure if the big blue boy scout would ever raise his signature curled forehead again.
