6. Hulk Is Just Left Alone - Hulk: The End
"Hulk just wants to be left alone!"
It's something Bruce Banner's grumpy alter-ego has been screaming at tanks for years, but what if he was left alone. Truly alone.
After one of the nuclear holocausts that happen every other week in alternate universes, Bruce Banner is left as the only human left standing, along with his big green buddy. Bruce, understandably a bit bummed out by the whole situation, just wants to die while Hulk stubbornly refuses to let him.
Although only a one-shot, Peter David perfectly builds Bruce as a lonely broken old man who is killed every night by giant cockroaches just to be resurrected in the morning by the Hulk’s regenerative powers.
Eventually, Bruce sees Betty Ross in a dream and awakens to a heart attack. Finally wanting to make peace with the Hulk, Bruce begs Hulk to die with him, but, once again, Hulk refuses, leaving him as the only personality.
The truly heart-breaking moment at the end of this story is Hulk’s tragic realisation that he is actually alone, and the only thing he can feel now is cold. Haunting.
