Rachel Summers is the daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey from a possible future. When she first arrived in the present era, she met a man who was kind enough to offer her shelter for the night. His kindness was rewarded when his life essence was drained by an immortal mutant named Selene who later joined the Hellfire Club. Seeking out vengeance, Rachel used her psychic powers to infiltrate the Hellfire Club. Using her powers as the Phoenix, Rachel had Selene at her mercy. She was prepared to kill her, not only taking vengeance for the man who showed her kindness, but for all the others Selene had slaughtered over eons.

Wolverine came after Rachel and gave her a speech about how this wasn't just killing, it was murder. He told her that killing Selene would mean that Rachel wouldn't be worthy enough to be one of the X-Men, told her that they're heroes and that means they have to play by the rules. Rachel refused to back down and rather than letting her kill a being of pure evil, or doing it himself to take the choice out of her hands, Logan chose another course of action. He stabbed her in the heart. Literally. It's one thing to stop Rachel from killing using non-lethal force; €”Wolverine's skilled enough to know how to use his claws without killing. But he chose to stab her in the heart. And what's worse is that he just left her like that, didn't even bother taking her to get medical attention. Some "hero."
