10 Reasons Ultimate Spider-Man Is The GREATEST Spider-Man Run Ever

1. Peter Parker's Story Moves Forward (And Has A Fantastic Ending)

One criticism of many comic book series is that they simply go on for too long and characters never really get an ending. In the main continuity, there was a time where Spider-Man grew older and moved from high school to college, and then even a job, but retcons reset him back to the status quo to re-tell similar stories all over again.

These decisions make perfect business sense (Marvel aren't going to just stop one of their most popular series), but it also means Spider-Man never really gets an ending. Which is an obvious issue, given the greatest stories tend to have a satisfying conclusion.

In just 160 issues, Brian Michael Bendis is able to provide that for fans. Peter Parker begins the story as an inexperienced teenage superhero insistent on honouring his Uncle Ben and then readers get to see Peter face a multitude of challenges that come along with that choice. Peter and his supporting cast grow and evolve in a natural way until eventually the story reaches its end in issue #160.

The now famous Death of Spider-Man story arc is quite well known amongst even casual fans of the characters, but it truly is a fantastic ending to Peter's story. We see Peter Parker fully embrace Spider-Man as everything reaches its boiling point. It's dramatic, exciting, and amazingly bitter-sweet.

While some fans may not want to see Peter Parker die, it fits the story extremely well - especially as the main continuity still catered towards Peter as the main web-slinger. Seeing Peter walk off into the distance with Uncle Ben is just a brilliant ending to Spider-Man's journey and for many fans it is the greatest ending the character could have. The funeral held for Spider-Man afterwards also feels like a true send-off to the character, as everyone comes together to honour the ultimate superhero.

Further still, Peter's death leaves the mantle of Spider-Man free for Miles Morales to adopt, making it one of the greatest decisions in comic book history.
