The 1990s was a dark time for the comics industry, and this was primarily marked by poor sales and the development of characters who felt like the very embodiment of teenage angst come to life, so to speak.

While characters such as Deadpool and Cable transcended their origins, their peers did not fare as well and eventually fell out of favour with most readers.

That's why it is all the more baffling that the New 52 saw it prudent to harken back to an era marked by oversized guns, numerous pouches and "grit". In addition to this, this time also embraced these embarrassing visual cues,

DC sourced the services of noted 90s authors and writers such as Rob Liefeld, Ethan van Sciver and Scott Lobdell, and their work reflected their heyday in the worst way possible. While this is not an attack on the above creatives, their sensibilities are best suited for smaller-scale/fringe stories and not flagship characters.
