10 Reasons Why The New 52 Did Not Work

5. It Did Not Handle Crossover Events Very Well

After Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC became well known for its crossover events. Identity Crisis aside, most DC events were well-received and had actual long-lasting impact on the wider universe.

Unfortunately, the 2010s were not so kind to the franchise as far as its grander stories were concerned. It did not help that these crossover events were editorially mandated, regardless of whether or not they made sense within the continuity itself.

This meant various stories would stop dead in their tracks to accommodate whatever cosmic foe(s) threatened the universe or multiverse. Far from the narrative heights and thrills of Zero Hour and Final Crisis, events such as Trinity War and especially Convergence were damp squibs that could not justify their existence nor bring meaningful change to the DC universe.

It is fitting that the New 52's events were disappointing messes, since its inciting incident - Flashpoint - never truly felt like it was meant to serve as a Crisis-level saga. This set the stage for haphazard crossovers that lacked the weight of their predecessors.
