10 Reboots That Changed Comic Books Forever
7. New 52
The New 52 launched by DC Comics in 2011 was one of the biggest changes to an entire comic book publisher's library in history. To be fair, DC wasn't a stranger to revamps when it kicked off the New 52, but it was considerably larger in scale than any of their other forays into reinvention.
One of the most significant impacts was the renumbering of their books. Comics that had been published since the 1930s were struck down from the hundreds of issues they previously published and were renumbered to #1.
In addition to changing the numbering, DC also limited their publishing to only 52 separate books, all of which were redesigned with new interpretations of their most famous characters.
Some of the books worked well while others failed to land. Regardless of any failures, the New 52 had a significant impact on DC Comics and helped propel their other publishing initiatives, Convergence and Rebirth, which followed through with the New 52 by incorporating some of the changes into the main DC Universe. Like their other reboots, New 52 made an impact and even went so far as to redesign some of their most popular and enduring characters like Superman.
