10 Saga Moments That Shocked The World

3. The Phang Escape - Saga #42

Saga The Will
Image Comics

When our dysfunctional family arrives on Phang, it seems like this may be a major hub for the team for a good while to come. The planet is substantially less dangerous than many of those we've seen before, and contains some friendly meerkat-like locals who seem to really bond with our heroes.

Hazel even has her first kiss here, with friendly neighborhood boy Kurti - so of course the team are going to stay here. After all, why wouldn't they?

Well, the small matter of a Timesuck provides an inevitable complication. Essentially an evil space baby, the Timesuck provides a gravitational pull that is slowly sure surely pulling Phang towards it, meaning that it's a case of fleeing the planet, or dying when it reaches the creature.

Unfortunately, the meerkat residents reveal at this point that their unusual beliefs means that they literally cannot leave Phang, and are convinced that they will be saved from being eaten by a celestial infant.

As such, when our heroes finally give up on saving their new friends and flee, we're treating to seeing these cute critters die brutally, tragically, and needleslly. To make things worse, in their late escape efforts, the pregnant Alana is thrown to one side of the ship, killing the baby inside her.

In short, it's one of the saddest moments in a series that had already been pretty intensely tear-jerking.
