10 Scariest Halloween Themed Superhero Stories

7. Batman: Ghosts

Venom #22 Father's Day
DC Comics

“Ghosts” was created by the legendary team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. In an energetic reimagining of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol”, it was the night before Halloween, and the Penguin was stirring at a charity function attended by Bruce Wayne and Lucius Fox. The bird was easily dispatched by the Dark Knight but, that night, Bruce’s sleep was anything but restful.

Bruce was visited by the ghost of his father, Dr. Thomas Wayne, with long chains attached to his body. Thomas warned his son that he was forging even longer chains as Batman and will be visited by three ghosts that night. First was Poison Ivy who took him to a Halloween in his childhood when he was dressed as Zorro. His father was supposed to take him trick-or-treating but was called away yet again. Next, she showed him a time as a young adult when he saved Lucius Fox from muggers in Paris.

The second “spirit” was the Joker, who showed Batman that the neighborhood kids were terrified of Wayne Manor. The last ghost was a cloaked figure that showed Wayne a lonely grave visited by an older Alfred. Lightning illuminated the name on the grave as Bruce Wayne. He awoke with new purpose. Wayne contacted Lucius Fox and asked for his help in establishing the Wayne Foundation, and he and Alfred lit up Wayne Manor as Bruce handed out candy on Halloween night.
