10 Secrets Of Neil Gaiman’s Death Of The Endless

4. Death Is Not A “Woman”

Sandman Death
DC Comics

Death is not really a woman. She is above such pedestrian classifications. Death is an anthropomorphic personification of a universal fact. Among humans, she appears to be a cute, pixie-ish young woman with pale skin, jet black hair, and the Eye of Horus drawn over her right eye. She wears black jeans, and black shirts, and wears a silver ankh on a silver chain. This is her sigil and the symbol of her power.

Death hates to be uncomfortable and to be dressed in stuffy formal clothes but she will wear the garb when appropriate and at formal meetings with her family, The Endless. Even when she does have to dress formally, she will still dress in black. She also favors top hats and occasionally caries canes and umbrellas as accessories to her outfits or just for fun.

When Death appears to other species, she will take on their characteristics and aspects that are culturally appropriate to ease their transition to the next plane of existence. She can effortlessly transform to suit the soul of the species she is there to visit and then resume her more familiar humanoid form to interact with Dream.
