10 Shocking Times Comic Book Heroes REFUSED To Help

9. Peter Parker Stopped Himself From Foiling A Robbery After Quitting The Superhero Life

The Amazing Spider-Man #50 has one of the most iconic comic book covers of all time. The cover art was drawn by legendary Spider-Man illustrator John Romita Sr., and it shows Peter Parker walking away from Spider-Man as the latter looks back towards Peter with the caption "Spider-Man no more!"

In the book's story, Peter's life in and outside the spandex suit was reaching a boiling point. He had nothing but disrespect and anger toward Spider-Man, and his grades were slipping in school. Aunt May was sick (again), and he reached a tipping point. He threw away his costume and walked away.

About halfway through the book, and shortly after he left his suit in a trashcan alleyway, he hears about a crime on the radio. A group of gangsters was ripping off a welfare office, so Pete jumped up, saying, "If that money isn't recovered, what happens to relief payments this month?"

Two panels later, and he slaps his forehead, saying, "Your web-slingin' days are gone forever! Simmer down, sweetie! You can read all about it... in the paper!" And that was it - the next morning, the crime was in the paper, and Peter barely gave it a second thought.
