10 Shocking Times Comic Book Heroes REFUSED To Help

6. Jessica Jones Quit Being The Superhero Jewel To Focus On Herself Following The Purple Man Incident

The Amazing Spider-Man #50

There are plenty of reasons why a superhero might decide to stop putting on the costume and helping people. It could be anything, including a family emergency, a loss of superpowers, or whatever happens to make sense at the time. For Jessica Jones, it was brutality.

Specifically, it was the brutality she endured as a slave to the Purple Man. Originally, Jones was the superhero known as Jewel. She had a fairly routine superhero career without too much happening to her. Still, when she intervened at a restaurant where Zebediah Killgrave was causing problems, her life completely changed.

Killgrave, otherwise known as the Purple Man, possessed the ability to force people to do whatever he wanted, and he took a liking to Jessica. He made her commit crimes, and he even pushed her to try and kill Daredevil at one time.

She eventually was freed from his influence, and she became naturally incredibly demoralised. At that time, she decided she would hang up her tights and stop being a superhero who helped others - she would help herself. She built a small detective business and barely sustained herself through alcoholism as she fought a long and hard recovery.
