10 Shocking Times Superheroes Couldn’t Save Someone

3. Jason Todd

Iron Man Mallen
DC Comics

Besides the loss of his parents, the death of Jason Todd was probably the most impactful tragedy in Batman’s life. For many years the Dark Knight blamed himself for the demise of the second Robin and even though Jason has since come back to life, it’s still regarded as one of the most dramatic moments in the Caped Crusader’s career.

In many ways, the future Red Hood had it coming: he was immature, impulsive and the fans didn’t like him that much. In fact, they went so far as to vote for his death in the most infamous poll in comics history.

Tracking down a lead to reunite with his long-lost mother, Jason ended up exactly where the Joker wanted him to be. Using a crowbar, the Clown Prince of Crime beat him to within an inch of his life and then killed him in an explosion.

Batman arrives too late at the scene and the image of him holding the lifeless body of the second Robin is one of the most haunting moments in comics. For Bruce it will always be one of his greatest failures as Batman.
