10 Shocking Times Superheroes Just QUIT

3. Ms. Marvel - Avengers #200

So far, we've seen superheroes who quit for personal reasons that they make of their own free will and autonomy. Sure would be a shame if that streak were to break so close to the end, right?

Yeah, okay, let's talk about Avengers #200.

In the realm of superheroes quitting out of nowhere, this is one of the most infamous examples. Mostly - in fact primarily - because of its utterly icky subject matter. The gist of it is that Ms Marvel has mysteriously gotten pregnant. Once the pregnancy occurs though, it turns out to actually be Carol's inter-dimensional "husband" (if we could make the air quotes bigger, we would) who reincarnated himself into this dimension through impregnating Carol. Who - along with the Avengers - is inexplicably okay with this, and rides off into the sunset with him shortly thereafter.

Yes yes, we see your raised hands and blaring alarm bells, those of you who haven't heard this story before, this isn't where the story ends.

Much later, Carol came back, having escaped her so-called husband Marcus. As it turns out, she was being brainwashed into being Marcus' wife just so he could enact an overly elaborate evil scheme. But notably The Avengers were under no such effect.

Carol quits the Avengers, quits being Ms Marvel for a while before joining up with the X-Men. All in all, a gross story glorifying rape and unwanted pregnancy that only acknowledged its own grossness after the ONE writer at Marvel who wasn't okay with this miraculously got to write Ms. Marvel.

And this was how you marked The Avengers' 200th issue, Marvel? Classy.
