10 Shocking Times Superheroes Just QUIT
4. Jack Knight - Starman
While the nineties is mostly remembered as a dark time for comic books, Marvel in particular, the mid to late-nineties was when DC REALLY got its act together. It's insane the amount and consistency of great stories that came out of this period, Grant Morrison's JLA, Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and of course, James Robinson's Starman.
The story centred around Jack Knight, estranged son of the original Starman, who wanted nothing to do with the mantle since beating up bad guys doesn't exactly do much for the environment or world hunger. But after fate leaves him with little choice in the matter, Jack takes up the mantle once more and is way better at it than he thought he'd be.
However, by the end, Jack is understandably pretty tired by the whole thing. And on top of that, he'd just had a baby with his girlfriend. After some well needed soul searching, Jack performs some final acts of heroism to tie up any loose ends and make sure he leaves Opal City safer than it was when he started. Even straight up giving away the Cosmic Staff to his protege Courtney Whitmore, who bears the mantle of Stargirl to this day.
More than 15 years have passed since the last Starman issue, and we haven't heard out of our old buddy Jack. But then, that's probably for the best. Our time with Jack was comparatively short, but if anyone deserved a happy ending, it was him.
