Frank Miller's 1986 miniseries is an exemplary piece of comic book storytelling and was part of a select number of stories that ushered in the Modern Age of Comics.
The story focuses on an older and retired Bruce Wayne who once again dons the cape and cowl to battle a new, more vicious wave of crime in Gotham. His return is met with both joy and resistance and his actions attract the attention of the government.
