Victor Stone was the son of two gifted scientific parents who used their offspring as a guinea pig for a variety of intelligence-enhancing projects. Resentful, Victor fell in with local petty criminal Ron Evers and got into small legal trouble. However, Vic refused to get into any of Evers’ larger schemes, and Stone channeled his anger and rebellion into athleticism.

Victor’s world fell apart when he went to his parents' lab at S.T.A.R. Labs. In the midst of an argument, an experiment in dimensional travel went haywire and a gelatinous creature broke free and killed his mother. The creature turned on Vic and destroyed two-thirds of his body before his father Silas made the creature retreat back to its dimension.

Silas saved his son with experimental metallic limbs, implants, and computer enhancements. Horrified at what he had become, Victor wanted to die. But he still used his determination and indomitable will to go through the months of physical therapy needed to control his new body. He was invited to join the Teen Titans and found friends who saw the man past the machine. Cyborg also befriended a class full of children with prosthetics who thought of Victor as their hero.
