10 Superhero Comic Deaths (That Didn't Mean Anything)
3. Captain America
We all know the story. A diseased and disabled 1940s kid is injected with serum and becomes the super-soldier we all know and love: Captain America. He fought in WWII, battled the Nazis, punched Hitler in the face and saved the world before disappearing in a block of ice. Decades later, he was thawed out and eventually became the leader of the Avengers. Mark Millars Civil War was one of the best event comics within recent memory. It had two outstanding moments: first, Spider-man unmasking on national TV and second, Steven Rogers being detained and shot. This blew the comic world apart. Captain America shot and killed? HOW?! Captains longtime companion-turned-villain-turned-hero (you can bet the house it's complex) the Winter Soldier, was the one to take on the shield and wear his own version of the stars-and-stripes. Bucky Barnes, the former assassin, the former side-kick, was now Captain America. He thwarted the Red Skull, saved America, and became the new symbol of freedom. It was all for naught, as Steve Rogers made his return. Apparently, Dr. Doom and other bad guys kept Steve preserved in an inter-dimensional table of sorts. After a few weird issues, Steve Rogers returned. He was not immediately given the shield again. He let Bucky hold onto it and let him continue being Captain America. Then Fear Itself happened, with Bucky faking his death and becoming the Winter Soldier again. Steve retook the mantle of the Captain again, and everything was back to normal again. So much for trying new things and evolving characters, eh?
