10 Superheroes You Didn't Know Had Shameful Origins

9. Catwoman

Always at loggerheads with Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle and her alterego, Catwoman, are rarely seen leaving the vicinity without having sneakily nabbed something inherently valuable. That€™s a part of her charm, and what makes her a useful asset for Bruce Wayne when he€™s in a tough spot that his gravelly voice or cumbersome car can€™t get him out of. She€™s light on her feet, and heavy-handed with the goods. It€™s safe to say, her moral alliances are left deliberately ambiguous - is she a goodie or a baddie? As is the case with popular comic figure heads, they€™re inked into many variations by different authors and artists - and Catwoman is no different. Her origins are no exception to that rule, with many shady beginnings existing for Brucie€™s favourite lady of the night. In the original Batman comic series, she fobs Batman off with a story about her transition into crime spawning from a plane crash she survived giving her amnesia - the only thing she remembers is her father€™s pet cat shop. Forward thirty years as she fesses up that the story was a load of old cobblers conjured up as an excuse for her crimes. Okay, so not exactly shameful, but wait... Her darkest origin was explored in the Year One series from the late €˜80s, where she was working as a dominatrix prostitute in Gotham€™s East End. Under the watchful eye of their abusive pimp Stan, Selina mothers a young co-worker, Holly and helps her escape. Clearly unhappy with a deserted street corner, Stan kidnaps Selina€™s sister. Selina then kills him.
