10 Superheroes Who Broke Bad

2. Superman

Dark Phoenix
DC Comics

Surprisingly, one of the best recent comics from DC has actually been the tie-in series for the Injustice videogame, showcasing Superman's descent into villainy.

The series begins with the Joker using a kryptonite-laced version of Scarecrow's fear gas to trick Superman into killing a pregnant Lois Lane. This triggers a bomb set to Lois' heartbeat, which destroys Metropolis. Pushed over the edge by the loss of his family and home, Superman does the unthinkable and murders Joker in cold blood. This sets Superman down a dark path as he decides to take more extreme measures in protecting the world, eventually leading him to try and implement a totalitarian regime.

What makes Injustice work over other alternate reality stories is how much it really feels like the DC Universe. This isn't just a version of Superman who turns evil because the writer says they do, it's a step by step look at how grief and rage can slowly turn a paragon of justice into someone who is willing to align with supervillains and beat to death other heroes who oppose him.

The best moments in Injustice are those where you catch yourself wondering if Superman is really in the wrong, or if his brutal methods are actually worth it to make the world a better place.

Also Alfred gets superpowers and headbutts Superman right in the face, it's rad.
