10 Superheroes Who Started Out As Villains

9. Rogue

Hawkeye Clint Barton
Marvel Comics/Jim Lee

If you only know Rogue through the movies or X-Men: The Animated Series, you maybe don't know this gal quite as well as you should. When Rogue was first introduced in the pages of Avengers Annual #10, she was a villain and a member of the Brotherhood of Mutants.

She found her way into that particular organisation after Destiny advised Mystique to make contact with her. Mystique managed to take advantage of Rogue's isolation, which was due to her mutation's ability to sap the life and powers from people. She compelled Rogue to join the Brotherhood, where she could be respected and gain a "family".

Soon after she was introduced, Rogue was sent on a mission to absorb the powers of Ms. Marvel, which proved successful. The exchange turns out to be permanent, and Rogue tosses the hero's body off the Golden Gate Bridge. After this, she heads over to battle the Avengers with her new set of powers.

Eventually, Rogue, Mystique, Dazzler, and Hybrid attacked Rom, the Spaceknight, and after absorbing his loneliness and nobility, she is changed in a profound way. She reformed and turned to the X-Men for help, only to be taken in as one of their own, but for most of her life up to that point, she wasn't a hero — she was a villain.
