10 Superman Graphic Novels You Must Read Before You Die

7. For The Man Who Has Everything

All Star Superman Frank Quitely
DC Comics

The second appearance of Alan Moore on this list, sees Superman's birthday go horribly wrong. When Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman arrive at the Fortress of Solitude with presents for him, they find Blue Boy in a catatonic state, having been infected by the Black Mercy plant, a gift from Mongul.

The dream that he is living through is of a Krypton no longer destroyed, one where he happily lives right up until he pulls himself out of his coma and proceeds to beat Mongul like a government mule. There is also a part where they all fight a giant space lily, so it's got that going for it as well.

The true genius behind all this is that, no matter how outlandish the idea of a massive space weed getting into a scrap with three of the most powerful heroes on the planet (and Robin) seems to be, Moore's storytelling drags you so far into the idea, that you never really question the insanity of it.

It's almost as if he's testing himself by coming up with the most outlandish premises he can think of, before working his magic on them.
