10 Superman Graphic Novels You Must Read Before You Die

6. Brainiac

All Star Superman Frank Quitely
DC Comics

Any villain that can put the fear of God into Supergirl needs to be on this list. And that's exactly what happens when Brainiac shows up, in Geoff Jones four issue spin on the green-headed collectors' arrival on Earth.

Having been on Krypton when Brainiac took Kandor, Kara is uber-freaked at his presence on her adopted homeworld and has to battle her fear if she is to help her cousin defeat the green menace. She achieves this in the end, as Superman defeats Brainiac and saves the bottled cities he has upon his ship.

There was a strange controversy attached to this when it was first released. On the front cover of issue #869, Clark and his father can be seen chatting and holding a beer. For some reason, probably due to a 'Oh! Won't somebody please think of the children!' mentality, DC decided this wouldn't be appropriate for the Man Of Steel, and so recalled all offending copies and re-released them with a soda instead.

It's alright for him to get into fights, but beer? Clearly that's the worst Kryptonite of all.
