It's the 1950s and the Soviet Union reveals its latest deterrent in the escalating Cold War - Superman. In doing so, they change the whole focus of the arms race from being nuclear to superhuman. In taking the boy from Kansas to the heart of the Soviet Union, Mark Millar gave readers the biggest 'What If?' moment since the start of the millennium.

He says that he first had the glimmer of this idea when he was six, after he had read a story wherein Superman's capsule had landed in neutral waters between Russia and the United States, causing both nations to claim the Kryptonian. Turning thirteen he would pitch it to DC, who would ultimately turn him down.

However, come 2003 it would finally see the light of day under the DC banner and go onto receive critical acclaim, as well as being nominated during 2004's Eisners.

Even though Millar has gone onto have very successful runs with both DC and Marvel, there is a very good argument that outside of Civil War and Kick-Ass, he has yet to reach the same heights as Red Son.
