10 Superman Questions That Always Confused You
5. What's The Deal With Supergirl?
Supergirl is a huge part of Superman's entire character, and one who commands a loyal fan-following all of her own. She's nearly as iconic as her cousin and just as important, but despite that being the case, it's fair to say DC haven't always encouraged that role in their universe.
If you thought Superman was confusing, then you should try taking a deep dive into his cousin's history sometime. It is bonkers - like, to the point where there have been multiple Supergirls operating in the main DC universe from different timelines, all with different costumes, alter-egos, and superhero identities.
Kara's passing in the first Crisis was a huge deal, as it was meant to herald the beginning of a new streamlined Man of Steel. Later writers and artists still understood the value Clark's old stories still possessed though, and especially Supergirl too, which is why they tried to bring her back so often.
The first Post-Crisis Supergirl wasn't Kryptonian because DC wanted Kal-El to be the sole survivor. Instead she was a protoplasmic creature based on Lana Lang's features created by Lex Luthor, usually referred to as Matrix. Then there was Linda Danvers, who sported a white crop-top and mini-skirt that would later feature in Superman: The Animated Series, only with the character's pre-Crisis roots still present, and Power Girl, a version of Kara from an alternate Earth now present in the DCU.
Kara later returned in 2004, and actually benefited from the New 52 and DC Rebirth reboots because it established her as the sole version of the character. Still, there's no getting away from just convoluted her past is, or even how long it took for Kara to re-establish herself as a pivotal part of Supes' history.
