10 Surprising Comic Book Crossovers That Somehow Work
6. Batman '66 Meets The Green Hornet
One of the more pleasant surprises to have come out of DC this decade has been the series of comics focusing on their older TV series. Kicking off first with Batman '66 - a series based on the Adam West and Burt Ward show from the sixties - DC have managed to mine some genuinely interesting stories from these older universes, marrying nostalgia with the publisher's vast history to expand those properties in a meaningful manner.
For the most part, these stories have opted to stay exclusively within the confines of the DC Universe. The first '66 spin-off started by remaking Batman villains who didn't appear with the show's campy aesthetic, but somewhere along the way someone noticed that they could go one step further by bringing other properties into the mix, which is where Kevin Smith comes in.
Smith is synonymous with cinema, but he's also an accomplished comic book writer. More recently he's tried his hand over at Dynamite Entertainment to work on the Green Hornet, the famed hero who started out as a radio show character in the 1930s but found major fame in the sixties in a show that featured Bruce Lee as Kato. Smith had written a script for a film that never got off the ground, and proceeded to adapt it as a comic for Dynamite, which in itself developed a cult following.
Somehow, at some point, it was decided that the Hornet should meet the Dynamic Duo, and the results are fantastic. The two shows had of course collaborated during their original run, but to see it expanded on with Smith at the wheel is priceless.
