10 Terrible Comic Book Moments That Could Have Been Saved With One Simple Twist
7. Alexandra DeWitt Becomes The Woman In The Refrigerator
If you keep up with comic or film criticism, you've likely heard the phrase "women in refrigerators" thrown around here and there to describe scenarios where women are maimed or killed solely to motivate the hero - who is usually their romantic partner.
This phrase was born in the pages of Green Lantern, when Kyle Rayner literally discovered his girlfriend Alexandra DeWitt's corpse in a refrigerator, having been killed by his enemy Major Force.
Now, it's worth clarifying that's the problem isn't that DeWitt was killed off - it's that she hadn't really gotten any time to develop as a character, so killing her off made her yet another random love interest that kicked the bucket in order to motivate the hero to do something.
If the idea was the Alexandria needed to be written out of the story, there are ways to go about that without involving stuffing her in an icebox. And, if she "needed" to die, maybe taking out some other loved ones at the same time might have made it feel less like she had a target painted on her from the moment she became Kyle's love interest.
