10 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined The Avengers For Everyone
8. The Weathermen
Along with Ultron, the Avengers have come up against some pretty formidable villains in their time. There's been multiple run ins with both the Kree and Skrull alien races, the world-eater Galactus, and even the Incredible Hulk was essentially a recurring bad guy in the early days. Quite a temper on that one. Like any comic book that's been around for nearly half a century, however, you're going to get some duds in there. Which is certainly the case with Avengers #210, widely regarded as the worse single issue of the title ever released, and its principal antagonists The Weathermen, widely regarded as the single worst bad guys that ever turned up in the title. Having noticed an unusual amount of natural disasters around the Earth, the Avengers decide to stick their collective nose in and figure out what they're all about. Splitting up and travelling to all four corners of the glove to investigate further, our heroes discover that the planet is under threat by a team calling themselves the Weathermen, each of whom has mastery over a different form of weather. Like Storm, if she was multiple terrible people instead of one awesome X-Man. It's not the crumminess of the bad guys that has this down as such a terrible mistake for the Avengers, however, but the fact that one of these villains kills Beast's long-term girlfriend Vera by turning her into crystal. And then Beast gets summarily kicked off the team with the next issue, thus ending an interesting era in the team's roster. Thankfully the character bounced back from Vera's death and has been included on a few later Avengers rosters, but still. Pretty naff innit.
