10 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined The Avengers For Everyone
9. The Force Works Reboot
In the mid-nineties, the Avengers were at their lowest ebb, commercially and creatively. In an effort to latch onto the trend for "cool" heroes - unlike those corny, pure and nice Earth's Mightiest Heroes - Marvel decided to send Iron Man off to start a new branch of the superteam from the ashes of the recently disbanded West Coast Avengers. They would differ from their predecessors in that they would be proactive in dealing with the sort of worldwide threats the Avengers tended to deal in, seeking out natural disasters and international conspiracies, and stopped them before they took effect. Oh also they would wear X-Men style uniforms with the "A" on them, because the X-Men were pretty popular in the early nineties. Besides the costume change, venue (the Avengers Mansion was swapped out for a Stark factory called, duh, The Works), and MO, the line-up was nigh unrecognisable and or. Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man made appearances but then so did the second Spider-Woman, off-brand Captain America US Agent, the none-more-nineties Century, Moonraker - who was as bad as the film - and the immensely forgettable Cybermancer. Latching onto the style of the time like an embarrassing dad in skinny jeans, Force Works took the Avengers away from what made them, well, the Avengers - they were less of a pure force for good and more EXTREME!!! Thankfully this all got forgotten in a retcon a few months later.
