10 Terrible Mistakes That Almost Ruined Spider-Man For Everyone

8. Changing His Powers To Match The Movies - Spectacular Spider-Man #16-20 (2004)

Spider-Man Organic Webbing
Marvel Comics

After Ana Soria was exposed to nuclear radiation, she turned into an insect-controlling being called the Spider-Queen. Desiring a mate, she kisses Spider-Man, infecting him with a toxin that gradually mutates him into a giant spider. Despite this transformation, MJ acts surprisingly cold towards Peter, even forcing him to go to a wedding even though he developed four eyeballs!

He eventually turns into a giant spider, finding himself completely under the thrall of the Spider-Queen. As Ana's masterplan reaches the final stages, Spider-Man drops dead and gives birth... to himself. This Spider-Man looks the same as the original, save for one major difference; he has organic web-shooters.

At this point, most readers realised this ENTIRE story was written solely to give Peter organic webs to tie-in with the movies. (And Marvel thought the best way to incorporate this element was to make a pregnant Spider-Man give birth to himself.)

What makes this story more ridiculous is how Ana keeps referencing how she can control Spidey because of his insect DNA. There's just one problem. Spiders aren't insects! They're arachnids! You'd think someone on the creative team would've noticed that.
