We've decided to include one case of truly extreme disfigurement in this list and that is the case of Fantastic Four member Ben Grimm. As a talented pilot and long-time friend of Reed Richards', Grimm promised to fly a spaceship that Richards had built in to space, with Richards himself, Grimm himself, Sue Storm and Johnny Storm on board. The unauthorised journey took them straight in to the middle of a cosmic ray storm, which exposed them to radiation against which the ship's shields had no protection. After crash-landing back on Earth, each of the four learned that they had developed fantastic superhuman abilities. However, while the others merely developed powers, Grimm's skin had transformed into a thick, lumpy orange hide. Although he had become superhumanly strong and durable, he was indeed terribly disfigured, but he became comfortable with his appearance and used his new abilities to help the Fantastic Four fight evil, becoming known as "the Thing".
