10 Terrifying Comic Supervillains (Who Only Appear Once)
3. Iron Maniac
First off, Iron Maniac is one of the most badass monikers in comic book history. It’s too bad the character only appeared in a single story arc. Iron Maniac’s real name was Anthony Stark. And as you’ve probably guessed, he was an alternate version of Tony Stark.
Iron Maniac arrived in the main Marvel universe from Earth-5012. On his Earth, most of the planet's heroes were murdered by a Skrull named Titannus. In the aftermath of Titannus’s attack, Stark came into conflict with his version of Reed Richards. Stark even killed his Earth’s Human Torch. After this Richards somehow banished Stark to the main Marvel Universe.
Once there, Iron Maniac began to plot his revenge. He kidnaps an innocent mutant to try and power a portal back to his dimension but is stopped by Spider-Man and X-23. Iron Maniac decides that he can’t trust the heroes of this world any more than he could the heroes of his own.
Possessing the same engineering brilliance of Tony Stark, Iron Maniac is able to construct a powerful suit of armor. He battles the likes of Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, and Captain America to a standstill. He is only defeated after a young hero named Freedom Ring sacrifices himself. Iron Maniac isn’t killed, but the last readers heard he is being held under lock and key on a S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier.
