10 Terrifying Joker Stories You Never Read

1. Batman Elseworlds: Two Faces

Joker Clown at Midnight
DC Comics

Perhaps the most bizarre, unnerving, and undoubtedly terrifying Joker stories of all time, Batman: Two Faces begins in ordinary enough circumstances.

A gala exhibiting a rare flower - the Twilight Orchid - descends into chaos when Two Face attempts to steal the rare and powerful specimen, killing Pamela Isley in the process.

Bruce, who was unable to prevent this tragedy, creates a serum derived from the orchid to rid Two Face of his dual personality affliction.

Testing it on himself, Bruce discovers he has imbued himself with superhuman strength and abilities, unaware of a devastating side effect.

Using his new-found power to fight crime and rid the city of those who would do it harm, a spate of grizzly murders of women comes to Bruce’s attention. Mutilated, smiling corpses point to a pale, hysterically laughing maniac who has begun to stalk the streets of Gotham.

A dark game of cat (bat?) and mouse ensues, as the fledgling crime fighter fails to locate this giggling horror, until an horrific realisation dawns on Bruce; in attempting to cure Harvey Dent of his dual personality, he has instead created one of his own: The Joker.

Bruce Wayne, Batman, the Joker... One and the same.

Like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde come to Gotham, Bruce is the one committing these abhorrent, violent crimes against the women of the city, including one Selina Kyle, as his hitherto unacknowledged alter-ego the Joker.

Unable to live with the guilt, the shame, and the horror he has unleashed, Bruce ultimately takes his own life, destroying both Batman and the Joker in one last act of courage.
