10 Things About Breaking Into Comics (That No One Tells You)
1. Be Ready For A Long Haul
It doesn't matter how good your work is, it's going to take time to break into the mainstream market. But if it's what you really desire, then it's worth it.
You could create comic book gold in a matter of weeks, but that doesn't mean you will immediately be seen by Marvel or DC and grabbed from obscurity and put on Spider-Man or Superman. It's simply not how it works.
Yes, some creators' routes will be faster than others, but you have to be prepared for a long haul.
You need to make your project, which takes time. You need to market it and find your audience and readers, and that takes time. You have to then start spreading knowledge of your work, and those editors may love that work, but they'll still want to see what else you can do - so it might be after your second or third project before you get picked up by mainstream comics publishers.
You'll face times where you'll feel frustrated, and where you might even think it's not going anywhere, and yes, you may even want to give up. But you have to push through if it is your dream to make those books and be part of those mainstream properties.
Keep pushing, keep working, and keep positive, however you can. Because if you keep working and showing the strength in that as well as your work, then it will happen.
It just takes time.
