10 Things About Breaking Into Comics (That No One Tells You)

2. Do A Show In The US

There is something to be said for meeting people face-to-face.

In over eight years of making comics, it is the last four that have advanced my career the most. Why? Because I attended conventions in the US.

There's a very simple reason for this: there are very few conventions outside of the US that editors from the big mainstream publishers (including Marvel, DC, Image and others) actually go to, and there is something to be said for making an impression in a face to face meeting.

Doing a show like New York Comic Con or San Diego Comic Con is a huge opportunity to spread knowledge of your work and of you as a creator, and the latter of these cons in particular is a dream for networking opportunities.

Obviously, you need to work out what is actually functionally and financially doable for you and your budget, but if your goal in particular is to break into mainstream comics then trying to do a US show will help loads. That is, if you use the opportunity correctly.

However, if you are looking for good opportunities for that kind of networking in the UK, you should consider shows like Thought Bubble and London Super Comic Con.
